#MoneyStory #3: The Floodgates Open!

(Continued from “#MoneyStory #2: The Early Years.”)

My old story, “Money isn’t important,” no longer worked when I became a single mom. I was now the sole breadwinner of my little family—and I was committed to making more money!

As my thoughts shifted from RESISTING money to WELCOMING it, I took on a new thought:

“Why Not ME!?”

Why couldn’t I be wealthy? I was just as smart and capable as anyone else… so I decided I COULD! (And the TRUTH was, I was now motivated to END the scarcity and money struggles I had experienced for so long.)

I realized I needed new role models and mentors. If I wanted to make more money… I must learn from people who made more money!

(This didn’t mean I respected my OLD role models LESS—there are many forms of mastery.)

It was also time for me to drop my JUDGMENTS and ASSUMPTIONS about people with money. It wasn’t going to work to set new goals while disrespecting those who achieved them!

I expanded my circle of friends, colleagues and role models to include multiple six-figure earners, millionaires and multi-millionaires.💰💰💰

They were lovely people who loved their families, looked out for their neighbors, gave to the causes they cared about and valued making a difference. (It’s embarrassing to think I ever assumed differently.)

Now I just need to figure out HOW to make money! (Details, details.)

In the next 6 months, I tried SEVERAL different ways. Network marketing, sales, and other “business opportunities.”

While I was figuring out what I did NOT want to do, I was expanding my mindset. I let myself dream. And I opened myself up to the possibility of unpredictable, unprecedented SUCCESS!

In the past, I was used to making very little money. But now, I was conditioning myself for a new reality.

Still, it was not easy finding the right vehicle! After inconsistent results and frustration, I took one last hourly job: answering phones for Nordstrom catalogue shoppers.

One month later, I was near death from boredom. I realized that, for me, that small-but-steady paycheck was NOT worth it! I gave notice and went back to the Help Wanted ads.

I searched for one I had previously responded to: “Do you like houses, are you good at math, and do you want to earn $60,000 or more with a flexible schedule?” Why YES! (This was the late 90s, when $60k went further.)

I had previously eliminated this possibility after learning it was “commission only” and it would take time to get trained, pass a licensing test and sell my first house.

It felt like a risk, but now, I was ready to take one. It was time for CHANGE!

I borrowed money from my mother to get through the next 60 days. I attended trainings and studied for my real estate exam. I went “all in” on my new career and listened intently to my new mentors.

I learned about real estate contracts and mortgages. I took ads and “sat desk time” to answer phones.

I put insane mileage on my car and ran up astronomical cell phone bills. (This was BEFORE unlimited talk time!)

Most importantly… I focused on what I wanted and BELIEVED IN MYSELF!

In a few months, I became one of the brokerage’s TOP agents. I almost fell off my chair the first time I was announced as the top agent for the month… I had been too busy selling homes to notice that I was leading the pack!

That year, I went from taking orders from Nordstrom shoppers to BECOMING a Nordstrom shopper. 👠👠

I had tripled my income. I wasn’t making $60k/year… I was making MORE!

I had created a whole new life. I was a 6-figure single mom who had the freedom to take her daughter to and from school.
Things were GOOD. However, I had fallen into a NEW trap… and I had a LOT more to learn about money!
