Magic wands, Aladdin’s lamp, wishing wells, fairy godmothers, even the Law of Attraction… all symbolize our ultimate desire to turn our dreams into reality.
The fact is, most of us have big dreams, but sometimes the gap between our dreams and our reality can be overwhelming.
- We want to lose 25 pounds, but we can’t lose one. (My friend Mark Combs recommends losing one pound 25 times….)
- We want to double our incomes, but we find ourselves struggling just to maintain.
- We want to fall in love, but we haven’t been on a date in ages.

“Too Busy” and the Sufficiency of Time

Well, that pig flu (or something like it) had the last laugh on me. Ironically, I am recovering from a fever, cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, lethargy and general inability to do anything but move from bed to couch and back to bed.
Even moreso than my previous post on the swine flu, it is ironic because I have felt in recent weeks that I “can’t” take a day off, that I simply “don’t have time” to do everything I “need to do,” between my father’s surgeries, my travel, multiple businesses and projects that all feel urgent for one reason or another.

Waiting for a Viral Outbreak of Common Sense

After noting the epidemic of swine flu fear and panic abounding in the press and public, my friend Bryan Rust recently concluded an email with the words, “Waiting for a Viral Outbreak of Common Sense.”
The Seattle Times expects the swine flu to hit up to one-third of Washington State residents, it has already hit Washington State University hard, where 2,200 students have reported symptoms, and WHO (World Health Organization) has labelled it a “pandemic.” An expert on Fox News warned people to be sure “not to hug and kiss.”

Kate Phillips Interviewed at SHINE

In May of 2009, hundreds of entrepreneurs gathered at the Fremont Studios for SHINE, an event sponsored by Biznik. With a team of 12 cameramen and 36 interviewers (including me), we interviewed 250 entrepreneurs about their businesses.
What do they do and why do they do it?
What inspires them to work long hours with little support and no guarantee of success?
Excerpts of the resulting interviews and other footage are being edited into a documentary called SHINE (a big film about small business).
Karrie Kohlhaas interviewed me. Hear why I’m NOT a financial planner, how I spent much of my life prejudiced against people with money, what forgiveness has to do with wealth and what’s so great about being an entrepreneur:

Michael Jackson’s touching memorial was a testimony to how loved he was by so many people. 1.2 million people from around the world applied for the “ticket lottery,” and millions more viewed what they could by television and internet. Celebrities and family members paid their tributes in touching words and music. The media coverage and attention dwarfed all other stories.
Scarcely has anyone been so popularly loved as Michael Jackson, his popularity even surviving controversy, accusations, and questions brought on by molestation charges. When many people look at Michael Jackson, they see a huge success, a tremendous talent, and a man loved by millions. Many who knew him saw a true friend. His daughter, Paris, saw “the best dad ever.”

A New Definition of Freedom

When people talk about money, “Freedom” usually refers to Financial Freedom: having income that supports you without the need to “work.” 
The goal of being financially free is a worthwhile goal for everyone, as is the ability to do what we want without having to “worry about making a living.” Being financially free doesn’t mean we won’t continue to operate a business, work or earn money, but we’ll do it out of joy, not out of need.

The Price is Right

Have you ever agreed to do something for a particular price – and then immediately regretted it? I know I have, and I know I’m not alone!
Just today, I had two conversations with self-employed clients and friends who were in a bit of regret about “underpricing” themselves. Wanting to make their customers happy, they had made themselves unhappy. They had traded their services for cash, and had given themselves the short straw of the trade.
Whether you own a business, work a job, or or invest in various relationships, organizations or causes, you are constantly “trading” your energy for something else of value. Maybe you trade your time for dollars with clients or an employer; maybe you’ve traded your career for the chance to be a stay-at-home parent.
No matter the situation, it can be hard to ask for what we want in the trade. And sometimes, we betray ourselves by asking for less than we know we’re worth. Continue Reading »

I’ve heard it said before that we are Spiritual Beings having a Human Experience. I’m not sure who originated that saying, but it’s one that I think many of us can identify with.
I believe that as spiritual beings, we share many characteristics of the Source or the Spirit from which we come. As Wayne Dyer would say, a slice of pie is likely to be the same kind of pie as the pie it came from! You wouldn’t have a piece of apple pie that was cut from a whole cherry pie. Why the Law of Attraction Doesn’t Always Work

The secret to The Secret:
A few years ago, the DVD phenomonon “The Secret” (and subsequent books and cd’s) produced by Rhonda Byrne popularized the Law of Attraction. Not a new concept, the Law of Attraction (LOA) says that we attract what we think about. Our thoughts and (especially) our feelings are, literally, “magnetic” and will attract more of the same. But does the law of attraction work?
“The Secret” was applauded for savvy production and marketing, bringing the LOA concept into the mainstream. Meanwhile, others criticized it for being overly simplistic, too focused on materialism, or simply too “woo-woo.” Continue Reading »
